Ten Steps to Peak Performance

Presented by Therese Quinn
LIFESTREAM Learning Luncheon
May 16, 2003

On Friday, May 16, Therese Quinn facilitated a LIFESTREAM Learning Luncheon entitled, Ten Steps to Peak Performance. A full house of LIFESTREAM alumni and guests joined Therese as she discussed the best ways to get the most out of your life. The following is a recap of this great presentation.

  1. Establish a Dream: The foundation of any person’s achievement can be found in their dreams. While the dream can be large or small, it must be realistic, achievable, exciting and worth achieving. To make your dreams more powerful, they should be written down and shared with others. Through sharing, people will embrace your dreams and assist you in achieving them.

  2. APyramid of Success. Vision, Purpose, Goals, Activities, Attitudeschieve Competence: Without competence, a dream will never become a reality. And while ‘task skills’ acquired through education are required to gain competence, ‘people skills’ are also very important since a dream can become derailed if people around you are not on board. Here is where embracing human diversity is an asset.

  3. Commit to Personal Growth: When was the last time you asked yourself, “What have I done lately to become a better person”? Commitment to personal growth requires a ‘4x4 approach’, where you read 4 books about personal growth, listen to 4 self-help audio tapes, attend 4 personal development workshops and take 4 vacations.

  4. Use Imagination: Creativity leads to opportunity when supported by positive thought. Therefore, the use of your imagination allows you to envision what has not been achieved and build a picture of your life’s potential.

  5. Reflect and Relax: To achieve your peak performance, it is important to be a ‘human being’ in addition to being a ‘human doing’. It is important to achieve a balance between work and love and to understand that quiet is an important interruption. Take time to reflect on what you have achieved and to laugh and have fun whenever possible.

  6. Focus on Friends and Family: Relationships begin with those closest to us. Personal growth requires quality time to be set aside for friends and family, and communication is the key to this time you set aside.

  7. Be a Cooperative Competitor: As opposed to having a ‘scarcity mentality’, it is important to embrace an ‘abundance mentality’. As a cooperative competitor, a part of being the best you can be is supporting other’s desire to be the best they can be.

  8. Let Go of Perfection: Achieving a lofty dream will require the release of your fixation on minor details. Many times, the cost of achieving ultimate perfection is greater than the risk of performing at a less than perfect level.

  9. Set Priorities: Do the big things first. While it may feel better to mark a large number of items off your ‘to do’ list, it is more important to tackle the most significant tasks first, making the achievement of the less important items easier to achieve. Peak performers usually set aside different days for different focus:

  10. Leave Your Comfort Zone: To achieve your dreams and reach your peak performance, you must leave your comfort zone. You must do the things you fear most to reach your dreams since dreams usually reside outside your comfort zone. As is taught in LIFESTREAM seminars, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got”.
